Car storage is a place where cars are stored and maintained. This can be a household garage or a public storehouse that is dedicated for storing cars specifically. It is to be understood that cars that are frequently used need not be stored in any garage. Those cars that are driven at least once a month for about half an hour do not need to be subject to any care routine. However, all cars need special care during the winter months regardless of their usage, especially if the temperatures are extremely low. The winter care routine is as follows.

  • The cars need to be warmed up carefully. Automobile oil needs to be bought from the auto parts store. A quarter of the car storage oil should be poured into the gas tank and the tank should be then filled up with the fuel. The oil will work as a cylinder lubricant.

  • After this, the engine oil and the filter also need to be changed. The cooling system should be drained and flushed. The heater valves should be open. The cooling system should be refilled with a one by one mixture of distilled water and fresh anti freeze material.

  • The trans or differential steering box needs to be topped up. After every drive of 30,000 miles the transmission and differential oils need to be replaced. Servicing the vehicle in the car storage should also be done at this juncture.

  • The brake fluid needs to be topped off. Every couple of years, flushing of the braking system with new brake fluid should be done.

  • After this, the vehicle needs to be washed and wax painted and its exterior kept in a tip top condition. The interiors of the vehicle also need to be cleaned thoroughly.

  • The battery needs to be removed and cleaned thoroughly. The battery case should be washed with a mixture of washing soda and water to neutralize acids. After that the battery should be dried and placed on an automatic battery trickle.

  • By temporarily reinstalling the battery, the vehicle should be pushed back into the car storage area. It is always better to cover up an earthen or gravel flooring with a plastic sheet and then drive the vehicle on to it. The plastic sheet will provide a vapor barrier and prevent the vehicle from rusting.

  • Next, the vehicle should be placed on a jack stand which should be placed under different suspension components that keep the vehicle in a ride height.

  • The spark plugs should be taken out of the engine and a tablespoon of the lubricating oil should be poured into each of the cylinders. The engine should be turned manually to spread the oil evenly on the walls of the cylinder. The spark plugs should be reinstalled.

  • A plastic bag should be slipped over the tip of the exhaust and a rubber band should be snapped around it to hold it open or closed. The air cleaner of the vehicle in the car storage should be treated in the same way. This will protect the car from external humidity.

  •  A couple of moth balls should be placed in the trunk, the engine compartment and the interior of the vehicle. This will protect the vehicle from insects.
