What do you do when all of your closets are full of stuff?  You get a storage unit of course!  Today, more than ever, people need a place to put all of the things they acquire.  There are some people that do not know when to quit and they just keep piling and piling things they pick up in their homes. In the eyes of many this is not healthy. In fact there are people who have been diagnosed with a bit of mental issue because they seem to hoard things until they have no more room to move. For everyone else that realizes their space is getting crowd they should look into a storage space.
Because we live in a consumer culture, storage has been able to flourish for the past several decades.  Early in the storage industry’s history, businesses were small, locally owned properties.  With the advances in technology, storage has grown into several decent sized corporations.  This actually helps customers, as a corporation can provide better quality and service than a mom and pop store. You do see many self storage companies that are larger than ever to accommodate this change in culture.
So, the next time you need a storage unit, look for a larger company which operates several stores.  You will get a better value for your money. They can offer the discounts you need. They could potentially have stores that are not really making a lot of money and keep those stores open because they want to be a fixture in that neighborhood. They feel they can break even by another store in a different location picking up the slack.

A cold storage unit is used for storing perishable food items. In these particular storehouses, the original flavor, texture, color and taste of the food items are preserved. It is not that food which is kept in the cold warehouses remains fresh forever, but at least you can expect that the quality will be retained for a longer period of time than it usually does without any special amenities for storing. There are paid cold storehouses in the market that can be hired for storing food items. But in the long run it is not economical because the hiring charges of the storehouse start exceeding the actual price of the commodity. Thus a cold storage unit should always be used for preserving food items of high value. There is no point in storing ordinary food in paid storehouses because the hiring charges of the storehouse will be much more than the actual monetary worth of the food stored in the storehouse.

A cold storehouse can also be used when there is a bumper crop and the extra harvest will perish in a limited period of time. The extra harvest can be kept in the cold storehouse for preserving its qualities and food value. A cold storehouse is also used for storing seasonal fruits and vegetables. These fruits are made available during the off season in the markets. Any top class firm in the food industry has a cold storage unit for storing non seasonal food items. Even big departmental stores and restaurants have cold storehouses for storing non seasonal food items for serving their guests. Generally, a cold storehouse is mostly required for storing non vegetarian food items like fish and meat that perish very fast. Even dairy products perish very fast and they need to be stored in cold storehouses if their qualities are to be preserved.

Storing food in cold storehouses is not something new. They are being used for storing food products by many firms of the food industry since a long time now. The cold storage unit should be strategically located for easy accessibility by the user. They are best located in the vicinity of the user so that he can access his food and use it whenever he wants to. If a cold storehouse is located kilometers away from the house of the consumer, by the time the item is brought into the kitchen it will have already deteriorated to some extent. The cold storehouses are in demand throughout the world. But they are in great demand in the hot tropical countries where it is generally very hot. They are also in demand where the temperature is moderate. It is of less usage in cold countries. But there too the cold storage unit is used for storing meat and fish for months together.

As the demand for storehouses is on the rise, many firms are opening cold storehouses throughout the world. One can get to see at least a single storehouse in most of the areas. These are quite expensive, but they are loaded with a lot of features that are specifically formulated to preserve the characteristic flavors, textures and the overall condition of the food items that are stored in them. One can be assured of eating hygienic food that has been stored in one of these storehouses.

Warehousing is always a problem and people these days are finding the solutions in storing the articles outside their home at storing facilities. These facilities have separate units for each customer and the size of a storage unit varies a lot. Most of the time people get confused and hire units that either does not hold all the materials or finds that a lot of place is left empty once they put in all the articles. You need not get confused if you follow some simple matters including what articles you are going to store and what are their sizes. This will give you an idea of how much space you will need. Moreover, you can visit a facility to have an idea of the layout of the units to plan how you will arrange the articles.

The size of a storage unit can be anything from twenty-five to about four hundred square feet. They are designed in such a way that you can store the articles of half a room to that of a whole house. If you find one unit inadequate, you can hire more than one. But that is a rare case. All the units in a facility are of the same height and generally the norm is to have eight feet high units. The smallest of the units can easily hold a double seat, a chair and a small table. This may be enough to give you an idea about how many articles can be stored in the unit. This does not mean that you will have to store these same items. You can easily store smaller articles in these units. But when doing so make sure that you put them in boxes before arranging them inside the storage unit . This takes to another important point and that is arrangement. Proper arrangement saves space and as you are paying for the space you need to be careful that you do not waste any. Here wastage means loss of money.

A bigger storage unit of say dimensions 10 x10 or 10×15 you can store almost all the furniture that cover almost a single room home to a two bedroom home. The larger of the two can even accommodate a lawn mower and a bicycle together with the furniture like a full sofa set, tables, racks, and quite a number of boxes with smaller items. These are good when you are renovating your house because instead of moving the furniture about every time a particular wall is painted or repaired. The whole house can be left empty for the contractor and painters to do their job. This not only expedited the process but also proves convenient.

The largest of the units of about two hundred fifty to three hundred or more square feet can hold all the articles of a full three to four bedroom house along with a car or boat. These units will naturally cost higher than the small ones and there are few numbers of them in the facilities as they are rarely hired. The usual necessity is during the time of shifting to a new house. Storing all the article of a house in a storage unit makes it easier to arrange the articles in the new house. One can take time to arrange the articles at the new house according to the plan one has instead of scouring from a dump that usually happens when the articles of a house are dumped together in the new place.

There are commercial spaces available for storing purposes, but one can always use his own creativity to build storing areas in the house itself. The advantage of designing a storage unit all by oneself is that one can train himself to identify and utilize the spaces available in the house in a wise manner. There are some really good plans that can help one in utilizing each and every nook and corner of the house.

Many people think about arranging items in the house in the ground space available. But on careful observation, one can appreciate the fact that a lot of free vertical area is available and that can be utilized for storing purposes. The space towards the ceiling on the upper side of the wall can be an excellent area for placing cabinets for storing items. Ladders can be used to access these high cabinets. The area underneath staircases can be utilized to build a storage unit for accommodating a large number of items. Similarly attics can be utilized well for storing many things and hence giving the housed an ambience that is hygienic and free of cluttering.

One can try making the spaces for storing by using some basic knowledge of carpentry. It is not a very difficult thing to do. Firstly, one needs to tidy up the place where one would like to install a cabinet. Then, the measurements of the cabinet that needs to be designed should be decided upon and checked if the chosen area on the wall is large enough to accommodate it. A sketch of the different parts of the cabinet should be made on a chart paper. This will give one a correct idea of the dimensions of the storage unit that is to be designed.

In the next step, one should buy wooden pieces or metallic tiles of the correct dimensions and variety. It is always better to get the material cut to the correct dimensions by the vendor itself. It will save one the time and trouble of cutting the material to size which may not turn out to be perfect because of lack of expertise. These days many of the vendors are selling kits where one can find material cut out to standard sizes. One needs to just take the material home and assemble it to get a storage unit of standard dimensions. After assembling the material one should fix up the cabinets at the desired location by hammering with nails. The cabinet should be fixed firmly so that it does not fall and cause a disaster.

It is better to design a cabinet with drawers and shelves to fit in a lot of items. The cabinets should be cleaned and treated with insecticides and disinfectants before being utilized because wooden furniture can be a haven to termites and pests. The cabinets, whether made of wood or metal, should not be placed under leaky walls because the dampness can spoil the material. If the cabinets are too high or difficult to reach, one can use stands or ladders to reach them.

It is always better to construct a storage unit all by oneself because the cabinet designed by another person that is bought from the market might not actually fit in the area meant for it. Otherwise one always gets a customized cabinet made by the vendor.

One might want to store the items that one does not use in a storage unit in the backyard of his house. In such a situation he should consider certain issues. The first thing that he should consider is if the items that he wants to store in his backyard can be maintained well there. If there are items for which some extra care, like environmental regulation, is required storing them in the specialized company provided environment is much better than storing them in the ordinary rooms in the backyard as the quality of the items might get deteriorated over time there.

Another factor that one needs to consider is that placing a storing shed in the backyard should not pose a problem to accommodating other things in the backyard. A storage unit in the backyard should not be a hindrance to any of the household activities that involve the backyard. If one has a vehicle in the backyard, the vehicle should be shifted to another suitable location before setting up an enclosure for storing things in the backyard. It should also be seen that the backyard does not get cluttered with too many items in it. The vehicles and the enclosures should be so arranged that the vehicles should not pose a problem to the opening and closing of the enclosure. Care should be taken that on the whole a neat appearance is maintained.

The storage unit should be so arranged that the backyard should have enough space to accommodate other features, like a garden, in future if desired. One should not be hasty in buying a shed for storing items in the backyard. The degree of safety provided by the shed should be of prime concern. Many firms sell sheds that are very attractive. They have wide open doors and windows. The walls may be made of glass. It is better to not go for such showy sheds because they are very fragile and safety wise very vulnerable.

The next thing that should be considered is that the storage unit that one would like to install in his backyard for storing items should be made of weatherproof material. Metallic and wooden enclosures run the risk of being rusted or decayed due to exposure to humidity and rains. If using these, care should be taken to coat them with a layer of weather protecting substance. Otherwise there are enclosures made of some special type of plastic that is immune to weather exposure. One can choose one of those sheds if he can afford it.

One should also be aware of the rules and regulations laid down by law with regard to installing a shed for storing items in the backyard. There are legal limitations to the maximum size of storage unit that can be installed in the backyard along with a limitation on how it is placed. The firms that sell these sheds have made it mandatory for the buyer of the sheds to know the laws prevailing in his area concerning the sheds that can be installed in the backyard before purchasing the sheds. The buyers should also consult construction experts to assess the type of base that is required for installing the shed. Otherwise selecting a wrong shed might require replacement which can be a costly affair in itself.

We all know the importance of packing properly when going on vacation, especially now that airport security standards have gotten more strict. We do not simply wad all of our belongings up and throw them in the suitcase, and if we do make that mistake, we will be doing laundry as soon as we hit the hotel room. We tend to become very conscious or how we arrange the things in our suitcase, so as to be able to make room for all of our clothes and other personal items. Usually we end up bringing more stuff home than we left with, and we are always careful about protecting our new souvenirs from damage by wrapping them securely, especially breakables. The same holds true for putting your belongings into a storage unit .

While storing, your personal items may not leave the ground and be flown all over the continent, but they are still subject to damage and breakage if the proper packing procedures are not followed. Many a tenant has discovered to their dismay that they failed to pack properly in their haste to get the job done, or that they failed to make an inventory of where in the storage unit each item could be found, resulting in broken articles, cracked mirrors, scratched furniture, or items buried underneath so many nameless boxes that there is no way you will ever find them without going through the entire contents of the storage unit .

While this is highly discouraging, it is easy to avoid in the first place if you remember, right from the beginning, to exercise some common sense in your planning and packing. Make a list of everything that you are storing. It does not have to be a detailed list of each separate article, but do attempt to keep similar items together in the same box, if possible. Tape a list of contents on each box before it goes into the truck. Wrap breakable items securely in bubble wrapping, and tape it well. Wrap the legs of tables and chairs in bubble wrapping, too, as this will help avoid scratches. Store mattresses and box springs in large mattress bags to avoid mold and mildew damage, as a storage unit can become humid inside depending upon the changes in outdoor temperature.

Store clothing neatly folded, in sealed plastic bins, not in trash bags. Scatter a few moth balls into the bins before you seal them, for extra protection. When loading your belongings into the unit, make a note of anything that you may need easy access to later on, and put those items in last. This avoids having to pull everything out when you come searching again. Pack furniture first, big items to the back, and then place boxes on and around these big items, with the itemized list of contents in view. Store framed pictures, mirrors and glass table tops securely wrapped in several layers of bubble wrapping, and do not lay them flat! Never store any food or other perishable items, as these can attract bugs and unwittingly cause a nasty infestation.

Keeping your belongings safe is important to you, or you would not be placing them within the secure walls of a storage unit to begin with. Just like going on vacation, the better you pack up your things, the less disappointments you will have in the way of damage when the time comes to remove your valuables when you are ready to retrieve them.

RVs are one of those things that are hard to know what to do with. Almost everyone would admit if asked that they would not mind having one. Who would not? They are a veritable home away from home, complete with kitchen, shower, television, couch, recliner, and queen sized bed. Depending on the type of recreational vehicle you go with, you can be driving while having a conservation with someone who is sitting at the kitchen table. And on those long drives to get to a park or the place you are going, when the scenery is wonderful but begins to look all the same, you can sit back and relax, maybe play a game of cards with someone, grab a drink from the refrigerator, or even go to the bed and take a nap. And when you finally do arrive at your destination, you simply hop back it in, hook it up, and you are set and ready to go. Usually this is a very simple process, and after such a long time of traveling all day long, it is always a relief to be able to have the luxury of immediately falling into your own bed, with your own pillows and your own blankets. Not some hotel somewhere, where you wonder how clean it actually is, and when the last time they shampooed the carpets was, but your own home away from home, taken with you.

Why would anyone say no to one of these? Well, a lot of times many people do say no, and it is not because of price. Although you have to have plenty of money these days if you want to purchase an RV, many times this is not the reason that people shy from buying them, or even considering them in the first place. The simple reason is that they do not have any place to keep such an enormous vehicle. Most people do not have either land, property or even a driveway big enough to serve as the home for an enormous RV.

What you should know if you are considering getting a recreational vehicle at all, is that you do not have to balk because of this reason. There are plenty of options available to you, including the rental of a storage unit . With the rental of a storage unit made specifically with an RV in mind, you can leave your worries behind. Most facilities have the option of open, covered, or even an enclosed storage unit for you to choose from. What is great about this is that if you have any other things that you may need to store, you can rent a storage unit for them right nearby where your RV is stored. What could be more convenient than that? A storage unit for your RV will usually have adequate lighting and electricity hooked up to it to make maintenance of your RV much easier. The covered and enclosed facilities protect your expensive investment from extreme elements and vandalizing. The enclosed buildings usually have secure alarm systems installed, which serves to make you even more comfortable about the safety of your vehicle. What is more, many facilities offer the bonus that you get to have free access to a dumping and washing service designed specifically for RVs. Of course this depends on the company you go with, but no matter what you decide, this is definitely something worth looking into.

If your family is anything like the average family who finds themselves with too much stuff and not enough room, take solace in the promise that relaxation is in your near future.

Decide to organize and relieve stress

Did you know that clean, organized spaces promote relaxation and reduce stress? Day spas are a prime example of how the right combination of relaxing, cool colors, pleasant music and pleasing scents can send you into a peaceful state of mind. While turning your living room into a spa is not practical, there are ways to stage and organize your entire home so you can come home and enjoy your family, rather than stress about the clutter and mess.

How NOT to bite off more than you can chew

The thought of trying to find a place for everything and put everything in its place may bring more stress than just living with it. But the temporary chaos of sorting through things will bring long term benefits to the peaceful environment of your home. Try making a goal for yourself to start with one room and focus solely on it. Perhaps you will be brave and tackle the junk drawers first, or maybe you will save the guest room that has turned into a storage unit for last. Whatever your tactic, make a decision and stick to it. Think only about cleaning that room and put the rest of it out of your mind. Compartmentalizing rooms in this way will help the job seem smaller and less overwhelming, thus, less stressful.

Time to sort your items

As you are sorting through your closet or garage or wherever you may be, place things into four separate piles.

  • Pile Number 1 – The fist pile should be for items you are going to keep. You can find a place to put them later, once you have cleared out the clutter.
  • Pile Number 2 – The second pile should be for items that are trash. If it is broken, very worn, or really just trash that has accumulated in the corner then do not hesitate to put it in the garbage bag.
  • Pile Number 3 – This should be a collection of things that are not trash, but that you no longer need. You can take this pile to a charity or sell them in a yard sale. No matter what you decide to do, you will feel cleansed by giving them away or glad to have finally done something profitable with them.
  • Pile Number 4 – The items in this pile will be sent to a storage unit until you need them. Place an item in the storage unit pile if you have sentimental attachment to it, but it may not fit your personal decoration style or you do not have a room to store it in a closet or garage. (Remember, the goal is to cleanse your home.) Items that may be in the pile for a storage unit are furniture that you might want later or to hand down to your children someday. Other items that would be good candidates for a storage unit are seasonal items like Christmas decorations and even clothes that are out of season.
Execute the plan
Once you have sorted things and determined their fate, start by throwing out the trash. Whew, you can probably already breath a little easier. Next, haul the appropriate items to your storage unit and store them neatly into the space. (Do not create more hidden stress for yourself at the thought of a messy storage unit .)

If you have decided to take the items from Pile Number 3 to charity, donate them as soon as you can so they are out of the way. Otherwise, choose which day you will hold your garage sale and make a few posters to place around town to draw customers. If there are items leftover from the yard sale, give them to charity or throw them away.

All the things you had in Pile Number 1 should be organized with like items next to like items. If you can, put smaller items into clearly labeled boxes. After you have organized what remains in your home, give it a good surface cleaning and wipe the dust off picture frames and book shelves.

Breathe a little easier
Give yourself a pat on the back! You have just unloaded a burden from your mind and now you can sit in your home with your family and friends and just enjoy one another.

The evolution of the storage unit is an idea that us modern day humans do not typically think about. When we want to store goods we have multiple choices on location and design. This was not always the case, the evolution in human development and technology played the key role in how we store our goods today.

The earliest forms of self storing are found in caves. Hominids used caves as a natural storage unit during the Lower Paleolithic period. The Lower Paleolithic period is one of the three classifications scientist has separated the Paleolithic period into. The Lower Paleolithic period extends from around 2.5 million years ago until around 200,000 years ago. The middle Paleolithic period extends from around 200,000 years ago until around 40,000 years ago. The Upper Paleolithic period extends from around 40,000 years ago until the end of the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago. Even though storing began in the Paleolithic period with primitive technology using caves, it is a way of storing we as modern day humans still use today. In a crude way, the cavemen of the Paleolithic period can be credited with the advent of climate controlled storing, the most modern type of storage unit today.

As human civilization advanced from hunter gatherers to farmers the need for storing goods changed. With the development of communities of people living, working, and trading together storing has become more personalized. During this time the invention of clay pots became a great way to store goods. Using this new technology made it easier to transport goods from one location to another and allowed for new types if items to be stored. This allowed for the further advancement in community development as well as trade. As communities grew, technology grew with it, ancient Egypt is a great example.  The discovery of new building materials and techniques has led to the large scale building of a community. Not only did this require the men for the construction, but supplies. These supplies needed to be stored, so we now see the first warehousing facility or storage unit being built. The housing of animals in stables, the storing of food for feeding the thousands of men, soldiers, and animals it takes to keep a community growing. If we take a look at the other side of the world we visit the ancient culture of Mayans. Mayans had the same need for storing as ancient Egypt, except for on major difference. The climate in Central America is much more humid than that of the deserts of Egypt. This created a need for more advanced storing technologies. Keeping food such as mesa dry when being stored was very important to the Mayan people. Not only was mesa a main staple of their diet, but also when mesa is stored wet it becomes flammable. Since keeping mesa dry when stored was almost impossible, new techniques in processing the corn and preparing it for storing had to be created. So drying of the corn in the sun to remove the moisture content had to be done first. This shows the correlation between the technology of how to store goods as well as how to process them.

The need for storing of goods has always been a priority of humans.  It is the technology of what we store that dictates the evolution of how we store. In addition articles we will follow evolution of the storage unit from the ancient world to the Middle Ages on into modern times.

What is usually the first thing you ask a customer when you are trying to assist them with self storage? Most people would say that you ask them what size they are looking for. Most people have a great idea on what size storage unit they need. There are still many people who are unsure on which size they are in need of. When you helping a customer determine what size storage unit will work for them, think about their needs not the needs of your facility.

Finding the right storage unit for your needs is not always the easiest task. You have to know what exactly you are storing and whether or not you want to add to the storage unit later. By knowing what you need to store in your storage unit, you can ensure that you are not going to pay more than what you need. In this economy, you need to ensure that you get the right storage unit for the right price.

Of course, we all know that finding the right storage unit and deciding whether to rent that storage unit is not easiest decision. What is important to the facility and what are important to the customer might be two completely different things. The storage manager might have a great storage unit for the caller, but it is on the third floor of the building. Not all customers want to store their belongings on the third floor of the building. Even though the storage facility might have elevators that make the storage unit easily accessible, the customer might not want to go that high in the facility. Storage managers should take the time to find out what the customers needs are for a storage unit and ensure that they take care of them.

What else is important that the caller needs to know when looking for the right storage unit? Well, not all facilities are the same. Some have a great location in which the caller can drive up to and find. There are many customers out there that want to have a facility in which they can get in and out of with little issues. Most people have days that are busy and they need somewhere that will take up little time in their days.

In addition, a customer would love to have a facility in which they can see the value or renting a storage unit. Customers need to know what they are paying for in terms of the facility those houses their storage unit. They need to know about the security or other amenities that will keep their belongings secure. The property manager should be the one to ensure that the caller knows about their facility before giving out the price most of the time, so the caller can see what the facility has to offer in the way of a storage unit.

A customer would also want to know that when they call with an issue, there is always someone there that can help. Some storage facilities out there do not always have someone at the facility that can help when the caller needs assistance. Customer service could mean the difference between renting storage units or not.

There are many different things to look at when renting a storage unit. You and only you know what you need and what will make or break the deal to rent from a particular facility. The more you plan and research, the more money you will save when renting a storage unit.
