Storage Room as a Time Capsule

Storage room is such a generic term. It refers to so many different types of storage. When we want a ream of paper we don’t say, can you get me a ream of paper out of the storage room. We ask can you get me a ream of paper for the office supplies closet. Or if you go to your wine storage you don’t say I’m going to the storage room. Instead, you say, I’m going to the wine cellar. Storage room is such an outdated term which is why storage room’s contents are outdated too. When I think of a storage room I see it as a time capsule, a place where we put books and mementos for future purpose. Once a childhood memory goes into a storage room, it stays hidden for a long time. As soon as we use storage room for furniture storage, that furniture is usually never seen again. It has been put into a time capsule for future historians to theorize and classify our era.

A storage room specifically is warehouse storage, closet storage, cellar storage, attic storage, furniture storage, food storage, and lockers. They also are in the back of retail stores and are often considered as computer memory. However, a storage room is mostly known as a storage unit or a self storage unit.

Storage units are important to self storage customers because they are places where people put mementos that they can’t get rid of. If self storage units did not exist, either would tangible childhood memories or family emblems. We would be forced to trash such precious items because we just don’t have the room around the house for them. New memories and furniture take over the old ones and our history is erased. Wouldn’t it be nice, as your drawing out your family tree for your children, to show them an artifact from you great, great grandparents? And someday they could do the same with their children. This is why we have storage rooms. They are a place to store our tangible memories, since we can’t rely on our physiological memories.

The burden of holding onto mementos is on the parents. Parents are the ones with the storage room. When the kid move out on their own, or relocate to another city, they leave their memento box at home in the parents storage room. Why is that? Usually, a son’s or daughter’s first home is too small, and storage space is inefficient. So the parents get stuck with all the storage boxes in their storage room. When the kids finally find a bigger home, the parents are still stuck with their children’s storage boxes, because it has been out of site for so long that it is out of mind. These memento storage boxes in a storage room only come out when the parents pass away. And then the cycle continues. However, there comes a time when our storage room has reached its capacity. When this occurs its time to rent a self storage unit.
