Have you ever wondered what started the boom in the self storage industry? Twenty years ago you would be lucky to find a storage facility in your town. Today, they are everywhere and area residents are fighting proposed sites. Meanwhile, the same people fighting against a local storage facility in their home town have storage issues of their own. But why the sudden craze? Where were they twenty years ago? Obviously, there is a market for self storage. Most self storage facilities report 90 percent occupancy on any given day and 1 out of 10 households are renting a storage unit at a storage facility. So, lets try to examine the sudden interest in self storage in America.

To find the origin of the self storage facility craze, it is important to take a step back in time and look at trends in the real estate market. Back in the early 50s, houses in areas such as Florida and Texas were built without basements. This is because the land is saturated with water and basements would flood. Then these states saw a rapid population growth from the north where people once enjoyed large homes with lots of storage space. Even today, people are moving into these same homes without basements and have nowhere to put there old basement storage.

An increase in consumption also triggered the need for a storage facility. Basically, Americans must have everything. And due to technology rapidly changing everyday, we must have the latest, whether it is a computer, television, or music device. We have to say music device because most devices that have to do with playing music change yearly. Within 20 years, we went from record player, to tape players, to CD players, MP3 players. In other words, technology becomes obsolete rather quickly. Just when you think you have the latest music player, another one comes out. However, people do not throw them out and unfortunately they do not have the storage space at home for them. We cannot live with them, and we cannot live without them. A storage facility is the answer.

People are more mobile these days. Back in the day when your grandparents worked they were more likely to start their career and end their career with the same company. Today it seems the only way up the corporate ladder is to switch companies or relocate to a new area for a company. A storage facility is used during a move to a new home. The move does not have to be far, it could be within the same town. Sometimes people move just to get a bigger home with more storage space. Unlike the old generation, they first home was their only home. So now people rent a storage unit at a storage facility for temporary storage. There furniture is in a holding pattern until the new home is ready.

High divorce rates have stimulated the growth of storage facilities in this country. In the present, more households are in a transitional phase were at least one member must seek an alternative living space. They also must seek storage space at a self storage facility. Why? The leaving member usually takes up temporary residence at a family member or a friends home. So they must take whatever possession that they were granted during the divorce and place them at a storage facility.

With home owner associations tightening up RV storage, boat storage, vehicle, storage and business storage restrictions, people seek storage at a storage facility so they do not have to give up their toys. Reality shows and magazines show messy people how to clean up the clutter around the home. People still do not want to part ways with their clutter and excess furniture, so they rent a storage unit at a storage facility.
