Home organization is big business. There are now extremely popular reality shows on television that feature a different, dissatisfied family living in a terribly messy and overloaded home in each episode. The hosts of the show hire a master organizer to go in, figure out the problem, get rid of the clutter and provide the family with a specially designed and controlled organizational program that will keep them from reverting back to a life of messy mish mashed clutter. The question is, will they abide by their new system and keep the unwanted junk out of the home? Perhaps these shows are so popular because the situation with clutter speaks to us. We enjoy looking into the lives of other people who have messier houses than we do. Maybe it makes us feel a little better about our own propensity for disarray.
Once the master organizer in the television show recognizes the problem areas, the first thing that they do is to go through the house with the owner and throw away or otherwise donate everything that is not necessary or emotionally significant. It is amazing the kinds of things that we seem to end up with over the years. Things that we do not need, or even really want. Take, for instance, the sombrero that you were given by the staff at the local Mexican restaurant when they came out and sang you Happy Birthday. It was a cute souvenir, yes, but what in the world are you supposed to do with it now? The more needless stuff that we accumulate, the more cluttered our home becomes. Garage sale enthusiasts know this. Sure, it is hard to pass up something that is adorable and only costs you five cents, but do we need it?
The next thing that the master organizer usually does in home organization shows is to bring in storage containers of various kinds to put away the things that need to be kept, but kept out of plain view. Clear plastic bins with airtight lids are excellent storage containers for just about anything that you can think of. Being stack-able, you can put away quite a bit of stuff in these handy storage containers , in a relatively small space. Since the bins are clear, you can see the contents of the bin without having to get into it. Using a good labeling system will give you easy access to anything that you keep within the storage containers , so you will not feel like something is out not available. While ultimately organizing your home takes some work, and a system that can be put into place to assist you, it is entirely possible.
Besides lots of storage containers , home organization takes diligence. You have to learn to let go of the things that no longer serve you. What is more important perhaps is learning how to say no in the first place, which keeps you from accumulating a bunch of needless junk to begin with. Whether you are using a system that was devised by someone else or you have come up with one yourself, you will need to stick with it. It is said that it takes twenty one days for a new habit to form. If you diligently practice the implementation of your new system for one month, you should be able to see a significant difference and be able to continue without too much hassle.
