Before you jump head first into the self storage rental process you really need to consider some things before you do so. Think about the items that you really need to store. If you can go through your items and pick out only the items most important to you that you want to store, you will be able to rent a smaller self storage unit than you would have to otherwise. With the items left over you can be a blessing to someone else by donating them to someone in need, or you can have a garage sale and use that money to help pay for your self storage unit. What do you do when you do not have time to sort out your must haves, from your can do without items?  This is when you need to go with a larger self storage unit so that you can have enough room to shuffle through your items. And after you have decided on the items that you do not need and you eliminate them from your self storage unit, you can then go with a smaller storage unit and save money.

Have you thought about what type of self storage unit you need to rent?  In order to decide you need to think about the type of items you have in your unit, the type of climate you live in and what type of self storage rental suits you?  Do you need to go with a self storage building that offers climate controlled self storage?  Or would portable self storage benefit you the most?  The nice thing about portable self storage is having the unit delivered to you and is either shipped back to the facility, or you can choose to leave it at your property, for your convenience of ease of access. On the other hand with a normal self storage facility, you get to take advantage of the security features of the property and you do not need to call in advance to access your self storage unit.  You have the freedom of coming and going so long as you arrive between their access hours.

No matter which type of property you decide to go with you also want to think about how you will store your items in the unit. Is there anything that you need to have easy access to while it is in storage?  Those items should be stored last so they are at the front of your unit so they are easy to go to. Any particular items that you know you will absolutely not need to get to, you should put into your storage unit first so it is in the back of the unit.

What about a truck rental?  Do you have your own truck that you will use to move your items in?  Do you plan on using a moving company?  Or do you have your own truck that you are planning on using to get your items to the property?  If you have your own truck, you may want to consider who will be helping you move. Many people are not to sure on how to go about asking others to help. A fun way to handle this in a stressful move is to have a pizza party. Anyone helping will be provided with plenty of pizza. That is a popular one among the college students or younger families. Advantages would the amount of money you save if you do it yourself, as well as hanging out with family and friends and the bonding experience.

The advantages of hiring a moving company to store your items in a self storage unit is that you would not have to worry about getting the manpower to handle the move and it would leave you with other important things to take care such as packing the rest of your items or simply supervising the move.  If you do hire a moving company, then you need to talk to them about the unit that you are renting.  Some moving companies will not do the move or they will charge an enormous amount if they have to bring the items to an inside or 2nd floor self storage unit verses a drive up unit.  It is always best to be prepared because this could make a difference in the moving company that you choose.  No one said that moving was easy.
