• Size – Size is an important factor while deciding on cargo space. Self storing type of storage units come in various sizes. Getting a size too small could create problems at the time of shifting your goods and getting a size too big may prove to be uneconomical. If you are unsure about the choice you are making, get the expert opinion of the facility manager. Show the facility manager an assessment of the goods you need to store so that he can choose the appropriate size for your container.
• Security – The level of security you need will depend on the value of the goods that you are storing. Check the security arrangements for the facility as a whole as well as for individual storing spaces. Find out if you can add your own security arrangements for your unit. Check who has access to the unit in case of emergencies.
• Costs and Insurance – The cost of the unit should be according to your budget. Various factors affect the cost of the unit like the climate controlling facility, size of the unit, security of the unit, etc. Weigh the benefits of each factor against the cost and make a decision. Also find out if insurance coverage is provided, and if so, to what extent.
• Environmental control -  Environmental issues such as pest control measures in the facility, type of goods allowed in the storage units – for example, if hazardous or inflammable material is allowed or not, etc. are important while deciding the facility.
