Sales Alert: PhoneSmart Predicts Perfect Storm for Self Storage Industry

Columbia, Missouri USA – May 11, 2010 – PhoneSmart announces a perfect storm for self storage rental activity building for the end of May and the beginning of June, 2010. PhoneSmart has its eye on the upcoming U.S. Memorial Day. Memorial Day 2010 falls on the last day of the month and also falls on a last Monday of May – both of these days are typically hot spots for moving and storage rental trends. The Tuesday after Memorial Day has been dubbed Crazy Tuesday by PhoneSmart director Tron Jordheim because it is typically one of the three busiest days of the self storage rental season. 

The confluence in 2010 of Crazy Tuesday, the last Monday of May, the first day of June and the last day of May has lead PhoneSmart to consider it a perfect storm, anticipating that the self storage industry will see a massive increase from May 18 – June 7, 2010 in people seeking to rent storage units. There is always a lull for the Friday through Monday of Memorial Day, acting as the eye of the storm, coming right after and right before a huge surge of activity.

Tron Jordheim, PhoneSmart Director, looks ahead saying, “Tuesday, June 1st will likely be the busiest day for the call center and storage facility activity that we have seen since Crazy Tuesday 2007 (the Tuesday after Memorial Day) or the last Monday of July 2006. At the same time as the U.S. is in Memorial Day mode, Canada will celebrating a long weekend in recognition of Victoria Day and having the last weekend of the first month of  its storage rental busy season. Canadian phone lines and stores will be jumping from May 18th on as well.”

This statement along with the company’s sales report showing an increase in call volume and web traffic has the company cautiously optimistic. This buzz among consumers of the self storage industry may be a sign that self storage rental volume will increase in the long term. Jordheim recalls a time when self storage rentals were at a high and states that, “this May might be the kind of May we used to see.”

Today, PhoneSmart reported a 36% increase of credit card reservations made from their self storage call center, comparing the first Saturday through second Sunday of May 2010 to the same period in 2009.

PhoneSmart also reported a 51% increase of credit card reservations when comparing the first Saturday through second Sunday of May 2010 to the same period in April 2010.
