It does not have to be that way. It is amazing what lack of organization can do to your sense of well being and comfort at home, amazing what it can do to your sense of control and ease in the office. Yet becoming organized, and cleaning up all that clutter and unnecessary excess, is really quite simple to do! Most of the time, individuals become so used to living in such a way, that they stop noticing it, even when it gets worse. But there are many different methods of organization that a person can use to get everything put in order and managed.
Personal storage is one option that many people do not even initially think of. If you have things that you know you cannot get rid of, but you are not currently using them, personal storage is the best short term or even long term solution. That way, you may stock away the items you have no room for presently, reduce the immediate clutter in your house or workspace, and yet have the peace of mind knowing that your possessions are in a safe personal storage place somewhere that you can easily access them.
It is probably easiest to begin by putting your belongings into categories. For instance, if you need to declutter your home, try finding some general, main categories you can put your possessions into, such as the following.
• Clothes
• Appliances
• Furniture
• Books/magazines
• Décor
If necessary, you can even create sub categories if this is helpful to you.
First, take one category, such as clothes, and decide what you will keep, what you will discard, and what, if anything, will be put into personal storage. Take the next category, and sub category if you have made one, and follow the same process. If it helps, you may initially want to decide what will go into personal storage before you even separate your belongings into categories. Whatever works best for your personal needs is what you should follow.
Many people make the mistake of using the wrong reasons for keeping items around the house that are unnecessary. A general rule of thumb is that if you do not see yourself using the item within the next six months to a year, providing it is not a family heirloom or sentimental possession, you probably should discard it. Packing things away for a what if situation is rarely a good idea. It creates many problems in the present that the future seldom pays for.
It is said that how a person organizes her home can reflect upon her entire life and self. Let it be a reflection you feel comfortable with.
