Moving and storage go hand in hand. After all, it is understood that you might need some temporary space to accommodate your stuff when making a move. There is often a period when one needs to do some repair work on his property and thus needs an alternative place to store belongings. For students, the summer presents a quandary- to move everything back in to your parents home only to move it all back in the fall can be a stressful experience. A long distance move is another time when both moving and storage are factors you need to address.

In these types of situations you need to be doubly prepared for a typical move across town into your new place. You cannot simply throw your belongings into boxes and unpack them immediately on the receiving end. They might be sitting in a locker for months, and from time to time you might need to retrieve one thing or another. This is going to be an impossible task if you do not plan properly. If you are going to need both moving and storage , here are some things to consider-

  • Pre-packing. This should be your first step. Start by making a list of things you will definitely need during the period your stuff is in a cargo space. Include all medicines, business attire, and children stuff, along with anything else you know you will need for sure. This will save you frantic trips to your unit. Also begin packing non-essential items well in advance. This will allow you to make a more accurate estimation of the kind of unit you will want to rent.
  • Renting a unit and booking a mover. Because moving and storage are such a typical combination, many self-warehousing locations have agreements with local cartage firms. This helps them offer you great rates. Choosing the right unit size you will need is also important. Do not try to squeeze all your things in one that is too small. That way, you will just end up shifting all your stuff to to a bigger unit later on.
  • Packing. It cannot be stressed enough how much impact packing has on a move and your use of your storing unit. Both moving and storage will be much easier to do if everything is neatly packed and labeled in good quality boxes. If you have neat stacks of clearly marked boxes in your locker, finding an item will be quick and easy. Also, by disassembling as much of your furniture as you can you will save money, because otherwise you will end up paying the professional shifting assistance companies to handle this process for you.
  • The day of the move. Communication is very important on the actual day of the move. If you live in an apartment, assure that you have access to the elevators and adequate parking.  Make sure everything is arranged with both the companies responsible moving and storage .
  • Cleaning. You might wish to engage the services of a professional cleaning company to come in after you have vacated your old premises. They can usually offer a reasonable rate to clean out an empty space.

The most important thing to keep in mind while planning a move or storing situation is to plan ahead – be prepared.
