People store their goods in storehouses with the hope and trust that they shall remain in the same condition as they had been in the past. It is the duty of the storing company to ensure that the goods are stored well and in the best of conditions. The whole job of taking care of the goods stored in the warehouses is taken care by the self storage manager . If the warehouse is too big there maybe more than one manager who ensures complete care of the goods. In case of smaller warehouses, there maybe a single manager. With the crunch in spaces and at homes and offices more and more people are hiring storehouses to store their goods. The demand for efficient managers is also on a high due to the boom in the industry. Today more and more youngsters are considering this as their full time profession.
 
A self storage manager has an important role to play in the entire process. Though his duties are well defined, many times he is required to perform much more than that which has been explained and expected from him. In case of large storehouses the manager many times has assistants who help him to manage the job in an efficient manner. These managers have a vital role to play in the smooth functioning of the warehouses. Like in all businesses these storehouses also have productivity targets that are required to be met. The self storage manager tries to ensure that these targets are met and achieved. Not only this, the manager tries to ensure that a computerized approach is maintained and an automatic store retrieval system is in use. This is important in order to maintain the health and safety issues of those who are employed in these store houses and those who work in them. His main work is usually related to the receipt of the storehouse goods and also proper dispatch and record maintenance of these items.
 
The responsibilities of a self storage manager may differ from one storehouse to another and is usually dependant on the storehouse size for which he is responsible. If the storehouse is quite large then he has a more strategic role to play in the entire operation. The manager is responsible for planning, administration activities and also responsible for the general management activities of the storehouse. If there are team managers in the storehouse he oversees that the manager carries out his responsibilities very well. He is the one who is responsible for the proper recruitment and training of the staff.
 
Once the recruitment of staff is made in an organization the self storage manager monitors the performance and progress of the staff. He needs work to be done and for this he has to motivate and encourage the team so that proper productivity techniques are ensured. He has to ensure that quality is maintained, budget is taken care of and the environmental objectives are met. He has to keep a track of the existing stocks either manually or with the use of computerized techniques. Sometimes he is required to deal with customer queries and communicates with them, either through telephone calls, faxes or e-mails. He not only monitors the current growth and requirements of the organization but also makes planning for future requirements and prospects of growth.
