Camping out is fun if you enjoy sleeping on the ground, loading all of the gear into the trunk of a car and cooking the hard way. There is also the great joy of putting a tent up or taking it down in the rain. Motor homes, travel trailers, toy haulers, pop up campers have brought a wonderful degree of comfort to vacation travel. They have also created a market for RV storage. There are many self storage facilities offering outside parking spaces for RV storage. The majority of this RV storage is on outside lots but it is secure RV storage with well lighted lots, video surveillance, and an access controlled entry gate. Often the manager lives right on the site for an extra layer of protection in RV storage. Smaller recreational vehicles can be stored in a storage unit. This type of RV storage keeps the RV in out of the weather and adds the security of a tenants personal lock on the door. Of course, for this RV storage to work out the vehicle must be able to fit through the door into the unit. A general rule for assessing the suitability of the unit is to ask if the vehicle on the trailer will fit through a standard garage door. This door size restriction makes it difficult to park a class A RV or a wide boat inside RV storage. Spaces for RV storage are very limited in availability in many areas of the country. At one time, for instance, people in southern California seeking RV storage were actually forced to find RV storage as far away as Nevada. In the past few years self storage providers have seen the need and there is an increase in RV storage facilities with dump stations, wash bays, and spaces at lengths to accommodate the largest of RVs. There are also pull thru spaces as not everyone who can afford a 40 foot motor home or a 30 foot 5th wheel camping trailer are skilled enough or have enough practice in backing the camper to feel comfortable backing it in between two other big trailers. RV storage facilities often do not have storage units. There is also RV storage inside which is a large warehouse type building with designated spaces for the tenant. One question someone might ask is Why do they not just pull it into the back yard or park it in the driveway? The answer is found in the by laws of many communities. Large RVs, no matter how nicely appointed or how lovingly maintained are looked upon as large trucks. Homeowners are forbidden to have the camper in the driveway or in the back of the property. No consideration for the fact that the cost of RVs can be nearly the price of a modest home. Also apartment and condo dwellers are not always allotted spaces for more than the automobiles the family requires. These factors also lead to a need for secure RV storage. Now that the baby boomers are retiring there is a desire to take the new leisure time to travel and do the things not possible during working years. The RV has become a real option to retirees. Many new RV owners leave the cold weather climates to spend that season in RV parks in warm weather locations. The RV can be parked for extended periods and have water, sewer and electrical hook ups through the park. This form of RV storage allows the owner to live in the park. If the owners need to be away from there for an extended period it may be more cost effective to place the RV in an RV storage facility rather than pay the rent, utilities, and hook up costs at the RV community. RV storage is by necessity priced at a different level than regular self storage. The RV storage facility must have more acreage as there is no efficient manner to stack the RVs and the high rise parking garages most are accustomed to would not have ceiling clearance for the big RVs. This makes it necessary either build RV storage with open parking spaces or RV storage that is a covered parking space. This space is still outside but provides a carport type roof for the RV to park under. The other consideration is cost. As there cannot be 3 floors of 5 x 5 storage units RV storage generally has a heftier price tag to defray increased real estate costs.
