Some people invest a lot of money on boats. Boating is a very popular hobby amongst many people in the coastal areas and those who stay by the river. Boating can be done throughout the year except winter when it needs to be stored so that it is available for use in the next season favorable for boating. Many people make the mistake of storing boats in their household storing areas. The boats are not stored in the most appropriate manner due to which they get damaged. It is always advisable to store the boats in professional boat storage areas.

The professional maintainers have the necessary knowledge and experience to store the boats in the ideal way. They take care of the boats in a lot of ways that are not known to the owners who can be assured of the quality of the maintenance services that many of the reputed professional maintainers offer. By storing the boats under professional and expert care the owner can be assured of the fact that the health of his boat will remain good and that he will not have to waste money on rectifying defects as everything will be checked and taken care of by the boat storage professionals.

If by any chance the professional services cannot be availed, then one should learn the correct maintenance procedures from some experts and then equip oneself with the tools and other infrastructure required for maintaining the boats. He should follow the correct maintenance procedures and keep his boat in a good working condition. The materials that he has to gather for storing a boat during the winter season are, fogging oil, fuel stabilizer, anticorrosion spray, spray lube, trailer jack and relevant tools.

Preparing the boats in the boat storage for protection against the winter is called by a specific term called winterization. For motorized boats the first thing that the owner should be cautious about during winter is that any condensation might take place in tanks and pipes. In order to prevent this, the fuel stabilizer is added to the fuel in the tank and the pipes so that no condensation takes place. It is always better for the owner to perform this procedure in the presence of an expert or follow the relevant instructions laid out in the manuals thoroughly. Now the fuel containing the stabilizer should be circulated through the fuel system by operating the motor or flusher for about one minute.

The next thing that should be done is to apply fogging oil to the carburetors. Many of the boats in the boat storage have specific fittings for which the fogging oil is applied. The boats that do not have such features will have some openings where the oil can be applied. Many times the cover of the carburetor needs to be removed to find such an opening. Application of fogging oil can be expected to make the motor smoke more than it would have been if not fogged when it is run initially.

The flusher, the gear case and the drain need to be flushed off the old fluid and the new fuel filled in its place. Presence of water in the lubricant indicates that the seal of the shaft requires replacement. The motors, spark plugs and steering cables of the boats should be treated thoroughly before being preserved in the boat storage for the winter.
