Becoming an owner of a self storage is a smart business move. Storing business is one of the fastest growing businesses. With families expanding, and living spaces becoming congested, most families need extra space to store their excess belongings. In the first place they may not have enough space for expansion. Secondly, it is more economical to have a space on rent than to build and renovate their homes. This is quite advantageous for any storing facility owner.

However, just owning a storing facility is not enough. It is easy enough starting such a facility. It requires a minimum level of maintenance and there is hardly any risk of failure. Of course, you need to plan your facility well, with your warehouses laid out to easy access. As an owner of a self storage you need to provide adequate features that people today expect from such facilities.

Having decided on starting a storing facility, it will require adequate research on your part to select a right location for it. Most people search for these services through online means. Have a user friendly website. Ensure all information that a customer will require is provided on the website. The types and sizes of the units, the payment terms, mode of payment, all need to be adequately and easily accessible to the visitor.

The first and foremost feature is the provision of security. People have many possessions which are precious to them, monetarily or emotionally. These could be the family heirlooms, antique pieces of furniture, certain electronic equipment, among many other items. Their concern is to store them in safe and secure environment and you, as the owner of such a facility, have to provide them.

Invest in top-of-the-line security systems and you will be paid back by those happy enough to use your facilities. Ensure that your unit is well lit, to begin with. Have twenty four hours video surveillance cameras to record all that is happening in your facility. You have the option of either providing access to your facility through a card controlled electronic gate, or through fingerprint biometric access system.

As an owner of a self storage think of providing extra services to further add value to your regular services. Provide packing and shifting facility along side the storing services. Supplying various packing material, such as different sizes of boxes, packing tapes, bubble wrap, among others, will add value to your bottom line. It would also be a great idea to offer free trucking services to move the possessions from their homes to your facility.

Many storing services now have shifting containers to bring their customers possessions to their facilities. These containers provide the customers time to load their belongings at their convenience. All you need to do is to drop the container at the location required by the customer and later pick it up at the specified time.

Providing both, the normal units as well as the climate controlled units is a good move. Weather controlled units are comparatively expensive but are useful to customers who want to store possessions that require controlled conditions.

Once you have your facility ready, ensure that you hire an efficient and professional on-site manager. Provide your customers with a facility offering one stop storing for all their possessions, be it personal belongings, their car, boat, RV, or even yacht.

Self storage is a term that most of us are aware of today. As urban population is on the rise, the number of accommodations that are required to accommodate this population has increased. Earlier people used to stay in joint families but now owing to the increase in the nuclear family set up, more and more people are trying to get separate accommodations. This has resulted in the reduction in the size of the accommodations. Earlier people would live in large and spacious bungalows and now only a handful are residing in such bungalows. People have to compromise with small living areas now and they have to make the best use of the available areas.
Self storage is one of the best options, or rather the only option, for storing extra items that cannot be accommodated in small accommodations. These are paid storerooms, cabinets, warehouses or large storehouses that are hired by people to store their belongings. Not only household stuff but official items can also be stored in them. Apart from hiring, these storehouses can be purchased also. People buy small, medium or large sized storehouses and install them in their gardens or any free place in the premises of their houses. By installing these storehouses in the premises of their houses they are able to access these storehouses at their convenience.
A self storage can be of great utility to people who relocate. People who relocate generally dispose their old items, such as, furniture.  But they cannot part with some items that are of great value to them. These items, for example, might be expensive furniture that is inherited by them from their ancestors. In such a case, they would like to preserve the furniture in a good condition for a long time. They would hire storehouses keep the furniture and get it maintained well. Moreover, they might also hire storehouses with the intention of moving them to the new location after finding a suitable accommodation to keep them.

A self storage is also hired for getting some items professionally maintained. For example, boats and recreational vehicles need to be maintained regularly. In such a case, keeping them in household garages or storehouses will not ensure proper care. As a result, the quality of these items will deteriorate over time and they will get damaged sooner than they would have under professional care.
Storehouses are hired for a large number of reasons. Recently a lot of storehouses have sprung up in almost all cities and towns of the nation. Their hiring charges have also risen up. Therefore, you can find a lot of people investing in the self storage organization. These storehouses are available in a range of sizes, types and locations. They are equipped with the latest technological infrastructure to ensure maximum care and protection to the items placed in them.
People can hire the storerooms on a permanent or a temporary basis. Before hiring them they have to sign a tenancy agreement which consists of the clauses that the tenant and firm need to follow. The client should always sign the agreement only after reading it thoroughly and understanding all its implications. Otherwise he might just end up with some unpleasant surprises, such as, extra costs later. It is always better to keep a written evidence of any verbal communication that takes place between the firm and the tenant.

Storage is an age old concept and it was a must for people down the ages to store food and other important items of living. But these days such storing is no more thought to be something different. By storing people nowadays mean storing the extra and less used items. This they do either in their attics and garages or for a fee in the self storing facilities that have cropped up in almost all the districts and counties. These facilities are constantly innovating and improving the amenities they provide to the customers.

The most innovative addition to the storage industry has been in the field of security. The days are gone when human security guards patrolled the storing areas to ward of all the unwanted elements in the vicinity. Now these same persons sit in front of the screens of monitors to watch the functions of the surveillance cameras that swipes the compound twenty-four hours a day to ensure safety for your articles. Even the cameras have improved a lot from the days of hazy and snowy pictures of the past to the high resolution digital units that are installed in the storing facilities these days. The days of storing the images on tapes are gone. Tapes have cleared the way for the high capacity discs that store the data these days.

The lighting system of the facilities that house the units for storage is always a matter of discussion when mentioning the amenities available at the site. Most of the storing units do not have lights for the units except those who have the entire set of units indoors. If the outdoor units have lights, it is publicized for attracting customers. But lighting is also undergoing changes and now you will have sensor controlled lighting system which turns on at the presence of people in a unit and turns off automatically when the unit is shut down. The compound lighting is also using energy efficient high powered lights to illuminate the compound of the facility. This ads to the security of the facility and the savings made on the electricity bills add to the profit and also the company can pass the benefit to the customers.

The next field of innovation must be the storing units themselves and there are innovations going on. The external parts of the buildings that house the storing units have improved a lot in keeping away the moisture and heat as has been the technology used for making the roofs as secure as possible. Special coatings of paint are used on the exteriors and the roof to make them durable. Special high grade steel is being used for construction of the sheds and buildings. Special construction is also allowing large open areas in which the units are housed. This is applicable more to the storage places that are controlled by temperature.

The innovations continue for the storing units also. Storage has moved from being fixed to movable. Units are being designed to fit anywhere and they are easily transportable. A company can easily go to building up a facility using modular units by fitting in one unit after another as and when required. Similarly the modular units are being transported to the house of the customer to arrange their articles and then are being transported back to the facility. This is attracting more and more customers as the hassles of taking the articles to the facility and arranging them is cut of.

The material that one sends to a company that provides self storage should be packed properly and care should be taken that it does not deteriorate. Otherwise the very purpose of storing these articles is lost. The first thing that one must do is to pack the articles in cardboard or wooden boxes. If the items are fragile then it is necessary to line the boxes with some padding material like foam, cloth, cotton or paper before placing the items in them. If you provide a protective covering of any kind of specialized material, it can also be a good option for electronic and glass items.

Too much material should not be packed into a single box. It is always better to distribute the load between two or more boxes before sending it for self storage . It is always not advisable to load a single box to its maximum capacity as though the box might appear strong, it might not be able to bear the weight. There are chances of the box giving in later on and hence failing the entire purpose of packaging. So it is very important to keep a note of the kind of box that is being used.

After packing the box it is always advisable to write the contents of the box and the exact type of room it is to be put in, on each and every side of the box. The supervisors or caretakers of the company providing the facility to store the boxes can be consulted if one does not know what type of self storage room and what type of conditions are most appropriate for storing the contents of the box. It is always better to jot down the contents on all sides of the box because one cannot be sure of which side one might be facing and have difficulty in trying to figure out the contents later when accessing the box in the storehouse.

One should be very careful while packing books, paper stuff and clothes because though they might appear light and small in size, but they can really make a box heavy if packed together. It is always better to distribute the load as much as possible when it comes to these items. In fact books can be placed in small numbers along with other items like cutlery electronic items etc. in the self storage rather than placing them in a single lot in a box. It will keep the box light and hence make accessing the stuff within it easy. By packing in plastic bags one can keep the packed material free of moisture or getting damp in case it rains during transportation.

In the case of glass items or electronic goods it is always better to pack each and every item separately in some protective covering within the box because it might so happen that during transportation the individual items in the box might bang against each other and hence break or damage each other. Moreover, later access of these items from the self storage becomes an easy process if the items are individually packed.

Wooden items should always be given a protective covering of wood varnish before packing. The varnish should be applied first and allowed to dry on the wooden surface. Then the item should be packed. Varnishing the wooden item will protect it from moisture.
