What To Look Out For In A Wine Storing Facility

One of the things to consider is whether the systems are in place in the facility or not. Check if the systems are redundant.  What happens in case of power failure  Is there a standby generator for the refrigeration equipment What if the refrigeration system also suddenly fails What is the backup option The wine storage facility should have clear cut plans to meet all these contingencies. Otherwise you would definitely be better off considering alternative options.

Another important factor is the insurance and business licenses of the storehouse. If appropriate licenses are not there, then your entire wine collection could be at risk. Also find out the degree of insurance coverage. Your homeowner insurance may not cover your collection once it is out of your house so find out about the coverage provided by the store house. It is very important to have proper insurance coverage for your collection prior to placing it in a wine storage .

What Are The Factors To Consider In Wine Safekeeping

  • Location – One of the important factors of wine storage is the location of the wine cellar. An underground wine cellar should ideally be facing north. A north facing wall receives minimal solar radiation during the day. This leads to less heat retention.
  • Temperature – Wine should ideally be kept in cool conditions. Temperatures between 10 degrees and 14 degrees Celsius are ideal for storing wine. Wine can be kept cool with minimal exposure to sun rays by keeping it underground.
  • Humidity -   Wine should ideally be stored in stable humidity conditions to keep the cork functioning. If the climate is not controlled properly and it is too dry, the cork is prone to shrink which causes leakage. If humidity levels in storing are too high, mould may grow which can lead to contamination and premature aging of wine. Wine can even get spoiled in such conditions.
  • Vibrations – The wine cellar should not be near a road or railway. The cellar should not be subject to sudden vibrations or movements. Unnecessary movements or vibrations are detrimental to the development of wine. In usual wine warehouses, your wine may be handled without your knowledge, but in specialized store houses for wine, the key is in your possession and nobody can move the wine without your permission.
  • Flooring and lighting – The level of vibrations in the wine storage can be reduced with sand or earth flooring.  Neon lighting or fluorescent lighting has to be avoided since they damage the wine. Lighting can be from candles. The candles, however should be unscented as scented candles, once again, may kill the wine.

Wine storage is becoming very popular to store wine in an environment that is climate controlled. Even if your wine is extremely good with great maturing potential, if it is not stored in the right manner, it will not reach its full potential. Storing your wine properly is very important. Typically, one buys large quantities of wine for future consumption. A self storage owner that offers to store wine in the appropriate manner provides the wine lover an opportunity to collect large quantities of his or her favourite wine for future enjoyment. Proper storing of wine also provides time for immature vintages to mature to their optimum potential. If wine is not stored properly, it can get spoiled thus reducing the chances of future consumption.
