It is the middle of winter, it is cold, and most people have yet to warm up the snowmobile. So, bet you did not know that the 2008 boat buying season is under way. This is the time of the year when boat dealers flash a shiny new boat to wannabe owners at one of the many boat shows taking place this time of the year. It is boat show season and during boat show season bargains are found as boat dealers hammer out deals during the dry sales season. But the last thing a buyer thinks about during negotiations is the cost of boat storage.
Before you can bring a boat home you need three things for boat storage. You must have access, boat storage space, and permission.
Imagine this scenario. You buy a 23 foot fishing boat with a boat trailer, but you drive a Honda Civic. Are you really considering towing that boat to boat storage in a car that has trouble hauling three 150 pound passengers with a tailwind? Of course you are not. That is ridiculous. Seriously, the weight of the boat is a major factor.
Check the owners manual for towing specifications. If your vehicle does not come with a trailer hitch have one installed at a truck rental place. One more thing, if you never towed anything before you better practice. It takes a bit of skill to maneuver a boat trailer around tight corners and to back it in the driveway. Find a wide open parking lot and practice before doing it for real. The neighbors probably will be annoyed that you are bringing home a boat. So, do not add embarrassment to the equation when you cannot back it in the driveway.
There is nothing like owning a boat, but if you do not have adequate boat storage at home, you will just have to admire it from somewhere else. Many sea lovers use self storage as boat storage. It is relatively inexpensive for indoor boat storage. But if you want to save nickels and dimes consider outdoor boat storage. The difference is in the name itself. If your boat is inside, it is more protected from the elements associated with the outside. However, your choice may be made up for you depending on the size of your boat. If it is too large, it gets stuck out in the rain. But it is a boat. It is supposed to get wet.
And know this, the cost for boat storage gets much higher. More popular on the coasts, marinas offer dry stack boat storage. The advantage, the boat is close to the water. The disadvantage, it is more than triple the cost of self storage.
Even if you have plenty of boat storage space at your home, you still may need permission from those annoying home owner association people. Before you even consider bringing that boat home, not only check with the HOA, also check with the city. With more people every year complaining about home boat storage, local city governments have adopted ordinances that make it unlawful to park a boat in a residential area.
