• Change the oil and oil filter. A car sitting in automobile storage with dirty oil could have problems by spring.
• Top off the fuel tank and add a stabilizer. If a gas tank is not full, condensation will develop in the gas tank
• Check the coolant levels and fill if needed
• Wash and wax before it enters automobile storage
• Take care of the floor in the automobile storage unit. Put a rubber mat or plastic sheet underneath your car to catch any fluid drips that may fall.
• Keep a window slightly cracked open while it is in automobile storage. This will keep an air flow through your interior.
• If your car is going to be in automobile storage for the entire winter, take the battery out and connect it to a trickle charger. Batteries will lose their juice if not used for long time periods. In spring you would want to be sure your car will start when you are ready to drive it.
• The battery should be out, but if not, turn off the alarm. You won’t need it in automobile storage. A storage unit is locked behind a gated fence. No one going to steal it.
• If you can, store your car on blocks to get the tires off the ground. This will prevent you tires from dry rot while it is in automobile storage.
• Plug the exhaust pipes with steal wool or a rag. This will prevent rodents from crawling into your exhaust system making to their winter home. Then put a note on your steering wheel to remind you that you need to remove your plug before starting the car.
• Make sure the parking break is released. The break pads can stick to the discs or rotors if applies for several months.
• You can use a car cover if it makes you feel better. However, your car will be indoors if you use automobile storage.
