Imagine building your dream home, only to move in and feel cramped a year later. Most homeowners do not have the luxury of designing their own blueprints and picking out the color of each tile. However, every homeowner chooses a home that they feel will meet their needs and the needs of their family.
Naturally, the home begins to fill with stuff – stuff from last years Christmas gifts, boxes of the clothes that the kids grew out of, the old furniture that you replaced when you moved in, etc. Now you face a dilemma. Do you fumble around the stuff in your house, as you are constantly moving storage boxes from one closet to the other? Do you take the weekend off and go through every closet and drawer to discard, sell or give away the items you do not need? Or, maybe you have outgrown your house and need to move.
If you are living in your dream home, you are not likely to pack up and move. While feeling exhausted from moving storage boxes and old furniture are not exactly what most have in mind when it comes to their dream home, these circumstances can be fixed quickly.
For example, moving storage boxes, furniture and lawn equipment to a shed in the backyard might be one option. Another long term solution to eliminating the annoyance of clutter is to put items in an offsite store room that you can rent on a monthly basis.
Still, you could have a garage sale or yard sale to get rid of some lightly used items and make a little money back from them. Yard sales are usually held on Friday and Saturday mornings and do require some planning. To prepare for your yard sale, go through everything in your house and decide if you want to keep it or sell it. Once you have gathered the items you are going to sell, organize them in your garage or yard by items and mark them with prices. Prices should be low and clearly marked. However, large items such as furniture, electronics, treadmills, and more will bring a higher dollar than old books and VCR tapes. Once your garage sale is over, you will have a little cash in your pocket and a cleaner home.
De-cluttering may not be enough for some families. If a family has grown with more children or relatives, then more room may be the only answer. The best way to prepare for selling your home is to begin packing and moving some things into a moving storage space so that your home will appear larger to potential buyers.
This technique has become a common practice for homeowners wanting to make a quick and profitable sell. By putting all the furniture aside from the necessary pieces into a store room, buyers will be able to enter the home and gain a sense of openness and space. A potential buyer should never feel cramped by the clutter that you have collected and they should not sense that you have outgrown the home. If they get a sense of claustrophobia, they are not likely to stay and look at the house or give it a serious thought. Renting a moving storage space while you are in transition will make for a quicker sell of your home.
Whether you decide to clean up, organize, sell some things or move, once you have cleared out some space to breathe or moved into a new space, you will be grateful for the open and inviting home you have created for your family.
