Whether your children share a room or already have their own, you will know as a parent that finding storage space in your home is a hard thing to do once you have kids. It is hard enough to find adequate storage space before you have them! There are a lot of things you can do, though, that are simple and can help you find that storage space in your home you never knew you had, no matter what the size of your house.
The first tip is merely to organize. You will be amazed at what a little time and planning can do to make the space in your home and rooms feel larger and more spacious. You might not technically be eliminating much actual bulk from the rooms, but you will be strategically placing it so that it is more compact and functional. Try buying specific storing totes to use and label them so that you will have quick and easy access to whatever you need.
A good rule when organizing your childs room is to label as well. This is helpful for you, but in addition, helps your child when she is cleaning her room. Now she will be less likely to pile everything in the closet or shove it under the bed. If you have the proper storage space available for her toys, clothes and other items, and every drawer or container is labeled, it will be much easier for her to put things away. And what is more, when she goes to look for a particular toy, or you are searching for a certain outfit, you will not need to send out a search party to your childs room. And this idea does not have to stop at the bedrooms. Utilize it in every room of your house and see the expansion of your kitchen, living room and bathroom as well.
Another good idea for saving space is to get those things you do not use, such as decorations, trinkets and heirlooms, up onto the wall. Put them on shelves, in cabinets, etc., but just get them up where they can be on display, but not necessarily down in the way of your everyday living and your childrens hands.
In the kitchen, specifically, there is hidden storage space you can use many times. You can decorate and utilize spaces at the same time. For instance, if you have cabinets that have any amount of space between their tops and the ceiling, that alone can provide a substantial amount of space. Strategically placed pots and pans, teapots or cookie jars can be placed in these spaces and look attractive at the same time. Plus, if they are things you do not use very often, it is probably the best option to have them up where they are a bit more difficult to reach, also out of the way or childrens little hands, and freeing up the more accessible cabinet and drawer space that you can reach down below.
Have a drawer or cabinet in your kitchen specifically for your children. Put everything from bottles, to sippy cups and childrens dinnerware into this place and let your children know that this, and only this, is the location they are allowed to tamper with in the kitchen. All other cabinets and drawers are off limits.
