Technology is increasing at an absolutely incredible rate. It likely has never progressed so quickly in such a short period of time. Just one small indicator of this is the portable storage of music. This has become a part of the vast majority of peoples lives. Portable storage of music can be found in cell phones, laptop computers, cars and even in watches. The portable music player seems to have become an essential part of everyday life throughout most of the developed world.

If you stop to think about it, this is so amazing. Just 20 or so years ago, the idea of portable storage of even small amounts of computer information was something out of the far away future, like a sci-fi film that could never possibly happen in real life. Computers back then were enormous. The first ones made took up en entire room and for the most part all they could do was very basic math operations.

So take that idea and compare it to the technology we have today. Not long ago, the cassette tape was the cutting edge in portable storage of music. Then the compact disc came out and the world was amazed. But then, in an amazing feat of science meeting technology, developers figured out how to store massive amounts of information on a very small space. Known as magnetoelectronics, information can now be stored and transported using electrons, meaning the technology world as we know it will be changing at an incredible pace in the next few years.

This technology has just recently been discovered, which means the possibilities for it are just beginning to be understood. We know the immediate benefits of magnetoelectronics from the tiny computers people have attached to their waist for the portable storage of music. But what could it mean for the future? Well, hypothetically, we could soon have the ability to keep every bit of personal information about us, including bank information, health records and anything else, inside something the size of a credit card. This could both be a very useful but also very dangerous thing. If people just buy into the latest technology, history has shown that this can lead to serious breaches in personal security and things such as fraud and identity theft.

For the professional world, new technologies such as magnetoelectronics could mean a great deal of conservation for the planet. While many records and business documents are slowly being transferred to computers and electronic formats, there is still a huge amount of paper records held in buildings and facilities. These paper records are still increasing, too. If technology gets to the point where it can be very reliable, as in reliable enough to keep records for several generations, than we could greatly reduce the amount of paper waste created every day.

Things such as receipts, reports, documents and agreements could potentially be handled all electronically using new secure technology. As mentioned before, however, there are dangers to accepting such a radical shift in things. While it would be great for the environment to stop using so much paper, it might not be time just yet. Signs are pointing to the fact that technology is going to become more reliable and used in ways we have never seen before. This will probably happen sooner than we realize. So, get ready for the future, because you are living in it.
