You have been offered that dream job of travel writer and will be out of the country for 6 months at a time. You are currently in the military and are being deployed. You need a serious vacation from life and want to travel abroad, for a long time. The remodel on your home is taking way longer than expected. Your 28 year old child needs to move back home because of money problems. Granny needs to move into an assisted living situation with not a lot of room for her belongings. Your offices medical records are taking up too much room and need to be moved off site.
These are all valid reasons why you might be looking for long term storage.
Long term storage is a relative term and depending on who you ask you might get a different answer about the length of the term. Some might consider anything longer than a one month rental to be long. Still others will tell you that 3 to 6 months is a longer rental term.
What does long term storage mean for the customer? It means that they will be able to have their items packed away in a safe and clean environment. The less times that you shuffle around your belongings the better for you and your stuff. Sometimes the office manager can offer you a discount for staying a longer time. These discounts can be a percentage off the monthly rent or a discount if you pre-pay for the time you will be staying. Some place will even offer to refund any pre-paid rent if you do not end up staying the whole time. This encourages people to stay around and not be in a hurry to move their stuff out.
What does long term storage mean for the site? It means more money for one thing. The longer a tenant stays the more money the site will receive. As the end of the month approaches, each site is hoping that they will not have any move outs. Some sites require a notice if you are going to be ending you lease. Check with your local site to see what they require if you want to move out. If the site can keep the customers happy then they in turn might refer the site to a friend or co worker. This is just added money for the site and a great way to gain more customers for free.
Most rental facilities do not make their customers sign any type of lease stating how long they will rent a unit for. The average minimum stay is one month with some sites offering less than that to attract some kind of business. In some types of emergency situations people will look for shorter rental terms. Check with your local site to see what their minimum stay requirement is.
The funny thing about long term storage is that most people do not know how long they will need to rent. They will think that they will only need to rent for 2 months and then they think, hey what is another month if I do not move out? It becomes an act on convenience at that point.
If they rent another month, they can put off the inevitable of moving or sorting through their things.
