Moving and storage are terms that are closely associated with each other. When one moves in or moves out of a place, he needs to think about storing his items safely in some place so that these items remain without getting damaged for a log period of time. Some manage to pack their items and shift their belongings to storehouses on their own. But others depend upon professional help. A lot of technical jargon is used by the staff of the firms providing the storehouses and one might not understand them. Hence, it is better to get acquainted with some commonly used terminologies so that one does not have difficulty in comprehending the lingo of the staff. These terms are as follows:

  • A commonly used term that the moving and storage staff uses is accessorial amenities. These amenities include packing of the items and unpacking them. It also includes shuttle amenities. These amenities are exclusively chargeable and are not included in the transportation costs.
  • When the staff refers to advanced charges, it is referring to the charges that the firm has paid on behalf of the tenant for getting some additional tasks done by other professionals such as craftsmen or any other professionals. These charges are finally added to the bill of the tenant later on.
  • The bill of loading is an invoice that contains the details of the goods loaded into the transport of the mover and the acknowledgment of the contract for transportation. The tenant should first read the bill of loading carefully and understand it well before signing the contract. It is always better not to sign the bill of contract for moving and storage of items if one does not understand it fully or is not satisfied with the terms mentioned there. The bill of loading is a very vital document and the tenant should preserve it well.
  • A binding or estimate refers to the tenant making an agreement with the mover on the total costs involved in transporting the items in advance. In the case of a non binding estimate, the tenant does not commit to paying a certain amount in advance. The mover makes an approximate estimate of the total costs involved in transporting the goods and the tenant pays the actual charges after the entire process of transportation is completed.
  • A guaranteed pick-up and delivery agreement involves the mover working according to strict deadlines. He commits to pick up and deliver the goods on certain fixed dates and reimburses to the tenant if he misses the deadline due to any fault of his. This moving and storage amenity is generally given for transportation of minimum weight.
  • High value articles are those articles that have a worth of more than hundred dollars per pound of weight. The mover should be told about such articles before hand so that he transports them safely.
  • An inventory is a list of all the items that are to be transported along with a description of their conditions.
  • The transportation charges include the fuel and chauffeur charges for the vehicle. These are different from the charges for the amenities.
  • The Order is a document that authorizes the moving and storage staff to shift items of the tenants from one location to another location.
