Climate controlled storage is an excellent choice for self storage tenants that find themselves concerned with the humidity and environment of their belongings while kept in a storage unit. While standard self storage offers no temperature control and is much like storing items in a shed or garage, climate controlled storage is kept at a constant temperature and maintains a lower level of humidity. Climate controlled storage is much like storing items in your own home and gives self storage tenants peace of mind by knowing their items are in a safe environment.
A climate controlled storage unit environment is ideal for wooden furniture, antiques, paintings, leather furniture or collectibles, clothing, paperwork and records, candles, artwork, TVs, computers and other electronics, medical equipment, musical instruments, mattresses, some metal items, and other temperature or humidity sensitive items. Climate controlled storage is also ideal for long term storage, where the temperature change or humidity levels have a larger impact on the items within the climate controlled storage unit.
Items that one can typically not place in self storage or climate controlled storage are flammable items such as gasoline, living or dead organisms, biohazardous chemicals or waste, trash, food and other perishable items.
Circumstances in which one would not need climate controlled storage may be for car storage, boat storage, RV storage and other large, outdoor items like lawn furniture or lawn care and lawnmower storage.
When one is searching for a storage unit, he or she should ask the storage facility manager if climate controlled storage is an option. Typically, there is a minimal price difference between the cost of a non-climate controlled storage unit and the cost of a climate controlled storage unit. Above the cost of the storage unit types, a self storage tenant should also inquire about the details of the climate controlled storage unit, as each storage facility may define climate controlled storage differently or offer unique amenities.
For example, one storage facility may consider having a cooling device in the unit as climate controlled storage whereas, other storage facilities may have state of the art temperature control and humidity sensors in their climate controlled storage units. Typically, a self storage facility will maintain all climate controlled storage units at the same temperature, which is controlled by the self storage manager. This prevents climate controlled storage tenants from forgetting to turn on the temperature control or adjust it with the seasons. Allowing the self storage manager to control the temperature of all climate controlled storage units is also more energy efficient. However, some self storage facilities do offer climate controlled storage units that allow each individual tenant to adjust the temperature of the storage space.
One specialized form of climate controlled storage is wine storage. Wine storage should be maintained at a constant temperature. This hybrid form of climate controlled storage usually comes with other perks for wine storage tenants, some of which include member-only tasting rooms and wine storage record keeping. Any reputable wine storage facility should also boast limited sunlight within the wine storage area in order to prevent UV damage to the wine bottles. One benefit to using offsite climate controlled storage for a wine collection is the large wine collection capacity. One can far exceed the space his or her home would allow for wine storage simply by renting a larger wine storage unit.
