Many people have unorganized items around their homes that they need to sort and store. The perfect containers for getting items from around your home together are storage bins. Storage bin come in many different materials like; plastic, wood, metal, cloth, bamboo, cardboard and wicker. Depending on what you may be storing and organizing will help make your decision on what material you would want to store it in.
Plastic storage bins are great for storing items that you want sealed away from dirt and dust. These storage bins can be found at lots of stores and are relatively inexpensive.  There are small sizes for trinkets and tiny goodies and large sizes for bigger items. This storage bins also come in many different colors so you can coordinate what you are storing. Some people just like to have everything in one color tote or some do not care.
Wood storage bins can be boxes or chests that store personal items. Cedar chests are made of wood and are used for storing special clothes, pictures, trinkets and memorabilia. Cedar chests also help keep moths out because the cedar lining is natural bug repellant. In older times, a hope chest or dowry would accompany a new bride to the marriage to the groom.
Metal storage bins are good for food storage and the military uses them for equipment storage. Metal compositions have changed and the newer metal combinations help keep the items stored fresh or dry longer.
Cloth storage bins are good for clothing, sweaters and other soft packable items that can be compressed. Cloth bins come in many colors to coordinate with bedrooms and closets. This is a good option for kid rooms as they are soft and fun to look at.
Bamboo and wicker storage bins are the more decorative of the bins and can be used in a room to provide storage while still maintaining your level of décor. These types cannot always be used outside, so check the label for instructions.
Cardboard storage bins are the basic, cheapest type of storage bins. They can be reused if kept in a dry area. Cardboard bins or boxes can be sealed with tape but will not provide a tight seal like the plastic type.
All of these types of storage bins can be packed with your sorted and organized stuff. Once you pack your storage bins you may find that you do not have the extra space in your home, attic or basement. Self storage units are a great place to store your storage bins. Self storage businesses are full of storage bins. Call your local self storage facility for self storage rates for you storage bins.

Storage is a very vague term that can be used in many ways. There are so many ways that the word storage can be used, here are some examples:
  • Computer storage- having a safe, dry and secure area to store computers
  • Food storage- containers made of various materials to hold preserve and keep food fresh for short or long periods of time
  • Craft storage- storage or containers that organize, store, and keep dry some of the materials needed for crafting
  • Boat storage- either dry or wet storage for your boat to prolong and safe keep your vessel
  • Self storage- a space to rent to store items that you do not have room for
  • Car or Automobile storage- either indoor or outdoor parking and storage for your vehicle
  • RV storage- covered or uncovered parking area for your recreational vehicle
  • Yacht storage- specialized boat storage to accommodate the size and shape of a yacht
  • Climate controlled storage- self storage unit that is kept warm in winter and cool in the summer reducing mold, mildew and smells
  • Shoe storage- containers large or small that hold and keep shoes dust free and contained
  • Storage containers- also know as storage totes
  • Storage bins- similar to storage containers

Many of the above named storage containers or bins can be stored at a self storage facility. Self storage businesses rent storage areas to people who are in need of storing their items away from their home or business. Renting storage is hassle free and will provide some relief from clutter and extra items or furniture that is getting in your way. Look for storage in the phone book, local paper or Internet to find storage near you. Some kinds of storage can be found for most home and business items that you will have an excess of and will need to be put away.

Self storage is a term you might be looking up in the phone book or on the Internet. Needing self storage is sometimes considered a hassle to some but most people that need self storage will find that the process is simple and uncomplicated. When you are looking for self storage you will need to find a self storage location near you that fits into your storage budget. Call around to a couple of self storage places to make sure the prices are about the same. Make sure you compare apples to apple when comparing self storage companies. The same features and benefits and security should all be taken into consideration when comparing self storage facilities. Once you have found a convenient location you will need to go by the self storage office to fill out paperwork and complete the rental process.

The basic storage paperwork will ask for your current identification and you will have to read and sign a rental agreement. Most self storage leases are month to month but you will still have to sign the legal paperwork before you are allowed to rent. You will be asked to pay for your first rental month and you will need a lock for your unit. Some companies give locks as a bonus to draw in renters, while most will offer them for sale in the office. This whole process only takes about 15 minutes and the manager can help expedite the process and can answer any questions. Many self storage managers will offer a tour before you rent and then take you to your specific storage unit when your paperwork is completed. You will then be asked to place your lock on the unit, claiming it as yours.

Most self storage companies take many forms of payment and many can set you up on an auto payment system where the self storage rent is deducted from your checking account or that gets put onto a credit card every month. If you find it hard to remember paying your bills on time, auto pay is a great way to avoid late fees. Ask your local self storage company if they can put you on a monthly auto payment, it is time and mind saver.

Many areas of the country have self storage companies that are easy to access. If you find yourself needing storage than you should not have trouble finding a company that fits your storage needs. The Internet is a great place to start your pursuit for local self storage. The yellow pages are another great way to look for self storage. Good luck in your quest for storage.

Storage Room as a Time Capsule

Storage room is such a generic term. It refers to so many different types of storage. When we want a ream of paper we don’t say, can you get me a ream of paper out of the storage room. We ask can you get me a ream of paper for the office supplies closet. Or if you go to your wine storage you don’t say I’m going to the storage room. Instead, you say, I’m going to the wine cellar. Storage room is such an outdated term which is why storage room’s contents are outdated too. When I think of a storage room I see it as a time capsule, a place where we put books and mementos for future purpose. Once a childhood memory goes into a storage room, it stays hidden for a long time. As soon as we use storage room for furniture storage, that furniture is usually never seen again. It has been put into a time capsule for future historians to theorize and classify our era.

A storage room specifically is warehouse storage, closet storage, cellar storage, attic storage, furniture storage, food storage, and lockers. They also are in the back of retail stores and are often considered as computer memory. However, a storage room is mostly known as a storage unit or a self storage unit.

Storage units are important to self storage customers because they are places where people put mementos that they can’t get rid of. If self storage units did not exist, either would tangible childhood memories or family emblems. We would be forced to trash such precious items because we just don’t have the room around the house for them. New memories and furniture take over the old ones and our history is erased. Wouldn’t it be nice, as your drawing out your family tree for your children, to show them an artifact from you great, great grandparents? And someday they could do the same with their children. This is why we have storage rooms. They are a place to store our tangible memories, since we can’t rely on our physiological memories.

The burden of holding onto mementos is on the parents. Parents are the ones with the storage room. When the kid move out on their own, or relocate to another city, they leave their memento box at home in the parents storage room. Why is that? Usually, a son’s or daughter’s first home is too small, and storage space is inefficient. So the parents get stuck with all the storage boxes in their storage room. When the kids finally find a bigger home, the parents are still stuck with their children’s storage boxes, because it has been out of site for so long that it is out of mind. These memento storage boxes in a storage room only come out when the parents pass away. And then the cycle continues. However, there comes a time when our storage room has reached its capacity. When this occurs its time to rent a self storage unit.

It goes without saying that a typical home has parts scattered all over the house. Just look in the garage and you’ll find car parts, tool parts, furniture parts, electronic parts, and boat parts. In the basement there are toy parts and parts that you have no idea where they belong. But we don’t want to just throw random parts away because you never know when you might need them.

Someone needs to invent a parts storage unit. Actually, one already exists. Storage units are not just for complete items like, cars, boats, lawnmowers, and lawn tools. They can be used for car parts, boat parts, lawnmower parts, and lawn tool parts. I’m sure every pack rat has a spouse yelling at them to clean out the garage or basement and get rid of all those parts. If you do, you should listen to him or her and use a storage unit for parts storage. Not only will you make your spouse happy, you will benefit from it too. A clean garage invites the car or truck back in. Garages were not designed for parts storage; rather, they were designed for car and truck storage. Use your garage as the designers intended. Wouldn’t it be nice to pull out of your garage with an ice and snow free car after a wintry storm? Garages also secure your car from thieves. So, get rid of the parts by putting them away in a storage unit.

All of us know a friend who owns a classic car planted in the yard growing rust around the fenders and hood. This friend swears that one day he will rebuild it and get it running again. Ten years later the car is still there but it is more hidden by the extensive brush growing around it. Do you know this guy? Of course you do. Everyone does. If you are a good friend you would tell him to put that hunk of junk in a storage unit. But you may view it as a parts storage unit because that is only what the classic car is good for. The car has been abandoned in the yard for so long that the engine parts are beyond repair, the tire parts have dry rot, and the body parts crumble with the slightest touch. Although, he still believes he can salvage the car to its original condition, you see it better off as a planter.

But let’s be serious. Cars make ugly planters. He is better off putting it in parts storage.

Why do people hold onto parts and decaying classic cars? Usually, it is a way they hold onto their youth. They can’t let go of the past so they cling onto anything they can, even if it is just parts. No one wants to hold on to their entire past. Some past memories are best forgotten. That is why they hold onto just parts, because they want to remember the finer parts of the past. However, just like we store memories in out brains, our parts should be put away in parts storage units.

Are you bummed about putting that classic car in storage for its winter nap. It was fun driving it last summer, wasn’t it? Well just thing how bummed you’d be if were stolen, or how upset you’d be if it didn’t start in the spring. This is why it is important to properly store your classic car in automobile storage. Automobile storage is safe and secure. Don’t you want the best for your investment? Top mechanics recommend automobile storage if you do not plan on driving your classic all winter. And don’t just park it and lock it. There are several steps to follow to store it properly. These steps listed below are recommended by all good automobile mechanics.

  • Change the oil and oil filter. A car sitting in automobile storage with dirty oil could have problems by spring.
  • Top off the fuel tank and add a stabilizer. If a gas tank is not full, condensation will develop in the gas tank
  • Check the coolant levels and fill if needed
  • Wash and wax before it enters automobile storage
  • Take care of the floor in the automobile storage unit. Put a rubber mat or plastic sheet underneath your car to catch any fluid drips that may fall.
  • Keep a window slightly cracked open while it is in automobile storage. This will keep an air flow through your interior.
  • If your car is going to be in automobile storage for the entire winter, take the battery out and connect it to a trickle charger. Batteries will lose their juice if not used for long time periods. In spring you would want to be sure your car will start when you are ready to drive it.
  • The battery should be out, but if not, turn off the alarm. You won’t need it in automobile storage. A storage unit is locked behind a gated fence. No one going to steal it.
  • If you can, store your car on blocks to get the tires off the ground. This will prevent you tires from dry rot while it is in automobile storage.
  • Plug the exhaust pipes with steal wool or a rag. This will prevent rodents from crawling into your exhaust system making to their winter home. Then put a note on your steering wheel to remind you that you need to remove your plug before starting the car.
  • Make sure the parking break is released. The break pads can stick to the discs or rotors if applies for several months.
  • You can use a car cover if it makes you feel better. However, your car will be indoors if you use automobile storage.
There might be a lot of steps, but they are mostly quick and easy. The biggest challenge is finding the right self storage business with availability. There are many classic car owners looking for automobile storage at the same time. So, if you haven’t done do already, call your local self storage business today and reserve a self storage unit.

There are very few activities more thrilling than boating. Everyone loves being out on the boat whether it’s for fishing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, or cruising. There is just something about being on the water that gives humans a sense of belonging. However, if you don’t store boats properly for the winter, you may be landlocked when spring comes around. Finding the right boat storageis as crucial as finding the best fishing spot.

There are many types of boats, each one designed for a specific activity. There are fishing boats, speed boats, sailboats, paddle boats, power boats, canoes, and rafts. Fishing boats come in many different sizes. Some are as large as houses; others are small as a piece of lumber. The size you need depends on the size of the fish you are fishing for. A speed boat has a water skier attached to the back of it. If not, speed boats are just on a leisurely cruise. Sailors love being one with nature cutting through the choppy seas under wind power. Canoes and rafts are common on lakes and rivers. Canoes and rafts are the camper’s choice for a floatation device on a waterway.

Whichever is your boat preference, seek proper boat storagein the off season. Before the temperature falls below freezing, it is important to prepare your boat properly so it can withstand the wintery climate. For power boats, if there is water inside your engine or gear case, the result can be a cracked block and an expensive repair bill. Water left in a boat, canoe, or raft will freeze and crack the haul and may cause severe permanent damage.

Once contracted, rust spreads like an incurable disease. Corrosion can establish a foothold on you boat’s metal components if the boat is not stored properly. Use corrosion inhibitors on both internal and external metal parts before you craft goes into boat storage.

If your power boat or speed boat has an outboard motor, prepare the engine before it goes into boat storagefor the winter. Always refer to the owner’s manual, but here are a few universal steps from my owner’s manual:

  • Flush outboard motors with freshwater
  • Empty fuel lines and carburetors
  • Fog the carburetor intake
  • Drain cooling passage
  • Fog the cylinders
  • Lubricate linkages and the electric starter motor
  • Drain and refill gear case
  • Touch up damaged paint
  • Stabilize the fuel
  • Clean and liberally lubricate propeller shaft
  • Put away in boat storage
You don’t have to be a certified boat mechanic to winterize a boat. Usually owner’s manuals provide step by step information. Of course, the internet has many website focused on boat storageand boat care. They are easy to find.

Boat storageis not limited to boat protection; your neighbors will love you for it. If you store your huge fishing boat in your front yard or driveway, the neighbor is forced to look at it for about 7 months. Boats are pretty in the water, on land they are an eyesore. Plus, many home owner associations ban boat owners for home boat storage, so plan on storing your boat at a storage unit

The Gift of Self Storage

Are you in the dire need for a last minute Christmas idea for a loved one? Are they a pack rat? Of coarse they are, practically everyone is in one way or another. How about this for a Christmas gift idea? Rent them a self storage unit.

The best gift you can give anyone is a clean house, and you can do this buy renting a self storage unit. Self storage is inexpensive when you compare the value you get from it. Not only does it free up space in your home lifestyle, it is safe and secure. Most self storage properties have video surveillance watching over your love one’s furniture storage. The storage unit is locked inside an enclosed gate. Gate access times vary, but many storage businesses are open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

There are many ways you can package a self storage unit as a gift. You can pay month to month or pay in advance. Ideally, you don’t want to pay for one month and then hand over the responsibility to someone else. Pay for at least a year in advance. Many self storage companies offer specials to those who pay in advance. Also, you are locked in on a price if the self storage business decides to raise the rent.

Do not just give a love a self storage unit by itself. They may take it as an insult, like giving someone a gym membership. Include your manpower. Offer to help with the moving process. You can clean the room in the house where furniture is being taken into storage. Rent the truck for them if you don’t have an adequate moving vehicle. Move furniture and boxes for them into the self storage unit. If they need more boxes and other moving supplies and shipping supplies, include those as part of the gift. So really, this is more gifts than just one. But you don’t want to give a present to someone that requires for the receiver to work or spend money.

If you are planning on using this idea, and you should, keep a few things in mind. The storage unit has to go in the name of the person present. You won’t be able to open a self storage account in someone else’s name. You will need your ID; it’s the law. But after you give the storage unit as a gift, you can have it transferred to your gift receiver’s name, if you want to. Have a good idea of how much space you’ll need to rent, because you are not just reserving space, you are reserving a specific unit size. Lastly, don’t see this as an opportunity to put your extra furniture in the storage unit too. It will appear as a gift really for you. If you need storage rent your own storage unit.

Again, Christmas is less than a week away, so hurry down to your local self storage business and rent a unit today. Storage units may not be going as fast as Tickle Me Elmos and Nintendo Wii Consoles, but availability is limited this time of the year.
